John,
Republican billionaire donors just bought an election to unseat Rep. Jamaal Bowman, spending $20 million against him in the most expensive House primary in U.S. history.
No wonder the billionaire class wanted to get Jamaal out of office—he led multiple bills to make corporations, billionaires, and ultra-millionaires pay their fair share in taxes. Meanwhile, his opponent is not only pro-genocide, but also against raising taxes on the wealthy.
To limit billionaires’ political power, we need to fight even harder for legislation like the Billionaire Minimum Income Tax, which would ensure that every household worth over $100 million is paying an effective tax rate of at least 25% on their full income each year—including all their gains on investments, most of which now goes untaxed.
The Billionaire Minimum Income Tax would raise more than $500 billion over the next decade, which we could use to invest in working class families, address the climate crisis, remove lead pipes that poison our drinking water, and more.
Stand up to the billionaire donors trying to defeat our progressive movement. Sign now to join me and our allies in demanding Congress pass the Billionaire Minimum Income Tax and limit billionaires’ undue influence on our democracy.
The vast majority of Republican billionaires’ donations have been spent on right-wing Republican candidates and causes. But they’re also spending many millions on corporate Democrats in blue districts (like the blue districts represented by Squad members), who’ll support policies that let them maintain or grow their power and wealth.
Although AIPAC is the biggest source of Republican money into Democratic elections, this goes beyond AIPAC.
For example, Pennsylvania’s richest person—billionaire Wall Street trader Jeffrey Yass—put millions into attacks against Rep. Summer Lee, another member of our Squad who’s serving her first term in Congress. Fortunately she overcame this, but right-wing billionaires aren’t going to stop: They’re afraid of our progressive movement to change the unjust status quo.
A handful of billionaires spent almost $1 billion to influence 2022’s midterm elections, and already in 2024, just 50 billionaires have spent more than $600 million in an attempt to rig our government even more in their favor. More than half of these donations can be attributed to just 10 billionaire families, including the Kochs and the Waltons.
While most people in the U.S. live paycheck to paycheck—and pay taxes on each of those paychecks—U.S. billionaires’ wealth has grown by trillions since the start of the pandemic, and billionaires have paid little to no taxes on those wealth gains because of our rigged tax code.
Two-thirds of likely U.S. voters, including a majority of Republicans, agree that billionaires should pay more in taxes. Our democracy is based on the principle of one person, one vote—but billionaires are drowning out the voices of everyday people.
We can’t let Trump-supporting billionaires keep buying elections. Please sign now to demand Congress pass the Billionaire Minimum Income Tax to curb billionaire wealth and power, and to make billionaires and ultra-millionaires pay their fair share in taxes.
Thank you. Together, we’ll keep fighting for the promise of a true multi-racial democracy that works for all of us, not just the wealthy few.
In solidarity,
Rashida
