Hello,

In this week’s edition, I discuss the differences between two types of lies and why you should avoid both. Then, I talk with trauma surgeon Dr. Eithan Haim, who blew the whistle on the Texas Children’s Hospital and their gender affirming care. From the archives, I provide guidance about how to positively affect change in your relationship with a significant other.

Advice

Avoid Becoming The Embodiment Of A Lie

In the last 50 years, philosophers have developed the idea of performative contradiction, which is similar to a lie. Normally, you think of a lie as saying something you know not to be true. But there are different forms of lies. Lies of commission involve saying something and knowing it not to be true, whereas lies of omission are when you have something to say and you don’t. People classically regard sins of commission more seriously than sins of omission. But sins of omission are not to be disregarded.

If you practice violating your own conscience with a performative contradiction — a willingness to act out what runs contrary to your own sense of morality — then you become the embodiment of a lie. There is endless metaphorical speculation of the spirit of the lie, and if you allow it to take up residence with you, then you do that at your peril. The danger of being an actor is that you become the actor and then you lose you. You replace you with that falsehood, and that will make you bitter, which only leads to becoming vengeful — and worse. Therefore, you do not want to practice that.

Identity As A Consequence Of The Lived Experience

Identity politics coalesces around any group where there is a sufficient number of people with at least one thing in common who do, in fact, feel alienated and resentful about the general culture for valid and invalid reasons. It does not matter if there is consistency in category structure across the different categories of identity politics. All that matters is that enough people will coalesce around each term. I think that is reasonable because many, many terms have been generated — like ageism, for example. Although, we have not seen much identity politics emerge around age, but that is probably because it did not coalesce. You can think about it as a Darwinian process, in some sense. There are 100 terms of alienation, and 10 of them generate enough social attention to become viable sociological and political phenomena. And they continue to breed, but that is because they breed whenever there is enough people to garner enough attention.

Relationship Advice

In this clip from one of my earlier lectures, I discuss how to come to a resolution with your partner. If you tell your partner that everything about them is wrong and all available correction mechanisms will not work, you are using fighting words. Rather than fight, opt not to berate them and, instead, specify the routine you would like transformed at the highest possible level of resolution. Deliver the least amount of information that you can to recommend the minimal necessary change that will satisfy you. Spell it out for them: What would make you satisfied? Then, let them practice a few times, which they will do badly and will take time, but reward them when they do. It is difficult for people to learn new things, but they will be responsive to reward and attention. In the meantime, you must be patient and focus on the positive, not only the negative.
