National Postal Workers Day

Dear Friends,

In honor of National Postal Workers Day, I want to recognize the important contributions made by postal workers every day. Our United States Postal Service (USPS) employees provide an essential and extraordinary service for our community, ensuring smooth mail sorting and delivery. 

Let me report on bills that I am supporting to help postal workers.

Here are some of the bills:

H.R. 82, the Social Security Fairness Act

• Which would repeal the Windfall Elimination Provision (WEP) and the Government Pension Offset (GPO) of Social Security.
• WEP and GPO reduce Social Security benefits for workers and their families who also have pension benefits from employment not covered by Social Security. These provisions can significantly decrease the retirement pay of hard-working public servants, especially postal workers.

H.R. 4583, Representative Larson’s Social Security 2100 Act

• Increases benefits by 2% across the board for all Social Security beneficiaries for the first time in 52 years.
• Repeals WEP and GPO.
• Strengthens the Social Security Trust Fund.

H.R. 3076, the Postal Service Reform Act of 2022

• Eliminated the mandate to fully prefund retiree health benefits,
• Required future postal retirees, who have been paying into Medicare their entire careers, to enroll in Medicare.
• Together, the elimination of the prefunding requirement and integration of postal worker retirees’ health care with Medicare should save an estimated $49 million over the next decade, according to the American Postal Workers Union (APWU).
• Provides transparency by requiring the Postal Service to develop an online database that shows weekly service performance information. 
• President Biden signed it into law in April 2022.

     I have also been proud to support resolutions that will force Congress to take all appropriate steps to ensure that the Postal Service is not subject to privatization, another that will ensure the continuation of door delivery for all businesses and residential customers, and a resolution that will ensure the continuation of your 6-day mail delivery service.

     I have always been a strong supporter of worker’s rights, retiree benefits, and helping working and middle-class people and families. I assure you that I will continue to fight against any efforts that go against supporting our postal workers or USPS.
