[ [link removed] ]Supreme Court sets extremely dangerous new precedent by granting Trump
presidential immunity, heightening the stakes for the November election.

In a landmark 6-3 decision today from the Supreme Court, the Court’s
conservative justices ruled that presidents (including former President
Trump) have absolute immunity for acts that are exclusively official acts.
On top of that the Court determined that acts that involve official and
unofficial conduct also are likely to have immunity and it created
enormous hoops for the lower court to jump through to hold that the
president is accountable.

The decision by the MAGA majority on the Court, with all of the Court’s
liberal justices dissenting, assures that any trial won’t take place until
well after the November election.

In a powerful dissent, Justice Sotomayor provides a stark warning about
the dangerous precedent this sets:

"Today’s decision […] makes a mockery of the principle, foundational to
our Constitution and system of Government, that no man is above the law.
Relying on little more than its own misguided wisdom [...] the Court
gives former President Trump all the immunity he asked for and more.
Because our Constitution does not shield a former President from
answering for criminal and treasonous acts, I dissent."

Going further to add:

“The Court effectively creates a law-free zone around the President,
upsetting the status quo that has existed since the Founding. This new
official-acts immunity now “lies about like a loaded weapon” for any
President that wishes to place his own interests, his own political
survival, or his own financial gain, above the interests of the Nation.
[…] When he uses his official powers in any way, under the majority’s
reasoning, he now will be insulated from criminal prosecution. Orders
the Navy’s Seal Team 6 to assassinate a political rival? Immune.
Organizes a military coup to hold onto power? Immune. Takes a bribe in
exchange for a pardon? Immune. Immune, immune, immune.”

Who knows what dangers await our nation if Trump were to be reelected in
November now that he is emboldened by the far-right Supreme Court
majority’s opinion? What other acts might he be willing to do now that he
is ‘immune’ from prosecution?
