In a 6-3 decision, the Supreme Court of the United States just ruled that Donald Trump—and all future presidents—are immune from prosecution for any official acts committed while in office.

This decision has dire consequences for our democracy, allowing any president to use the presidency as a shield against repercussions for any crimes committed while in office, from inciting an insurrection to prosecuting political rivals and worse.

["If the occupant of [the presidency] misuses official power for personal gain, the criminal law that the rest of us must abide will not provide a backstop. With fear for our democracy, I dissent." Justice Sonia Sotomayor]([link removed])

In her dissent, Justice Sotomayor writes further, “When [the president] uses his official powers in any way, under the majority's reasoning, he now will be insulated from criminal prosecution. Orders the Navy's Seal Team 6 to assassinate a political rival? Immune. Organizes a military coup to hold onto power? Immune. Takes a bribe in exchange for a pardon? Immune. Immune, immune, immune…In every use of official power, the President is now a king above the law."

Donald Trump has proven himself to be someone who disregards the law in service of his own political gain. Now, the Supreme Court has given him—or any future, dangerous president—carte blanche to commit crimes and misuse the tremendous powers of the presidency.

It is now more important than ever to keep Donald Trump out of the White House. It’s also vitally important for Democrats to maintain their U.S. Senate majority to appoint future Supreme Court justices who will protect the rule of law and win back the House majority as an important check on the president’s power, should Trump win.
