Tax Amazon: Green New Homes

Dear Seattle DSA Members,

Support our effort to tax Amazon and fight for green social housing and emergency aid for Seattle’s working class! On April 4 we kicked off signature gathering to get a $300 million per year tax on big business onto the November ballot. This tax will fund thousands of new, green homes over the next decade. As Coronavirus makes an already severe housing crisis even worse, our cause is more urgent than ever.

With shelter-in-place, we are facing an uphill battle, without being able to engage people on the streets or in public forums.

Green New Homes is Seattle DSA's initiative to support the Tax Amazon coalition. Can you chip in and help us mail petitions to all Seattle DSA members? (Note: All expenses and all donations for this campaign need to be recorded with the city)

Tax Amazon for Green New Homes

  • Build Affordable, Energy Efficient, Union Constructed Publicly Owned Social Housing. Retrofit Homes, and Free Transit as a Step Towards a Green New Deal.

  • Tax Amazon & Big Business to et It Done.

COVID-19 Emergency Relief

We are also fighting for the City Council to pass an additional $200 million tax on big business to fund emergency relief for Seattle’s residents most impacted by the COVID-19 crisis. This crisis has made the social issues we already faced—affordability, workers rights, xenophobia, food security—even more acutely felt. Relief must not come on the backs of working class people; we must tax big business to get it done.

Toward a Green New Deal

This crisis will lead to new attempts to rebuild the economy in the interest of the billionaire class.

Trump is already destroying environmental protection. Billions are flooding into the pockets of big business to reinvigorate capitalism on the backs of the workers and the environment. There is an alternative. Let's answer this crisis with a complete reorganization of the economy in the interest of working class and oppressed people with a Green New Deal and a movement for democratic socialism. What we need your help with

COVID-19 makes collecting signatures very difficult. We can't stand in front of grocery stores or go door to door.

We are demanding from the city, the country and the state that signatures can be collected online as part of our democratic rights, which can’t stop under this crisis. In the meantime, we will be mailing out physical ballot petitions for all members to sign themselves and get their family and friends to do the same -- and send them back to us.

Can you help us fund sending the ballot to all DSA members? We need to collect signatures in this COVID-19 crisis and that costs much more money than it otherwise would have. Please help us Tax Amazon by donating here: GreenNewHomes.org

To be able to produce our posters, leaflets and flyers in favor of this ballot initiative, we had to set up this campaign, GreenNewHomes.org, and register all donors and their information with the city. This makes things a bit more complicated, but with your help, we can raise the means to get this done and tax Amazon and the other large corporations.
