Samuel --

Even in a campaign as busy as this one, you get to see
small moments that reveal a candidate's character. Today,
I want to describe one such moment involving one of the
best men I've ever known: my running mate, Tim Kaine.

Last week, Tim visited the memorial at the Pulse nightclub
in Orlando along with our friends Gabby Giffords and her
husband, Mark Kelly. After Tim laid a bouquet of white
roses at the memorial, he approached the reporters there
with tears in his eyes.

"This is a weird thing to say, but I always hoped that the
Virginia Tech one would be the worst one ever," he told
them. He was talking about the 2007 shooting at Virginia
Tech that occurred while he was governor -- a tragedy
that had, until Orlando, been the worst mass shooting
in our nation's history.

Tim has said that the day of that shooting was the worst
of his life. In the wake of that attack, Tim took on the NRA
in their own backyard to try to prevent gun violence -- and
despite incredible odds and near-constant attacks from
the gun lobby, Tim won some important victories.

That's one of the reasons I picked him to be my running
mate: I know that when things get really tough, he's not
afraid to stand up and do the right thing, even if it could
cost him politically.

He showed us that same grit on the debate stage last night.

I was proud to watch Tim take on Mike Pence and hold
him accountable for Donald Trump's appalling campaign,
on issues from gun violence prevention to nuclear
non-proliferation to women's reproductive rights. I'm so
grateful to have Tim on this team -- and I feel the same
way about you. Governance is about teamwork, and it's
going to take all of us working together to win this
campaign and make life better for American families.

With just 34 days left, I'm under no illusions that we have
this race in the bag. This is going to be a close election,
and the stakes are unfathomably high. So today, I'm
asking you to fight just as hard as Tim did last night, as
hard as he and I will always fight for you. We can't afford
to take this for granted. We must do everything we can to
win in November and keep our country moving forward:
