Friends,
Late last month, Congresswoman Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez and I wrote Donald Trump a letter. We described how the U.S. had just hit the highest number of COVID-19 cases globally and how New York had become the eye of the storm -- more specifically, Elmhurst Hospital, in my district. We asked that he direct protective equipment and ventilators to Elmhurst Hospital.
A day later, I wrote something else:
“My hands are shaking i can’t type. A nurse at my elmhurst hospital who i don’t know just called me crying. She said they need vents but more so need doctors and also doctors who are ICU trained. She told me they cry everyday bc they know they’re gonna die. They’re begging. Please”
I wrote my letter to Trump as a U.S. congresswoman; I wrote my tweet as a heartbroken New Yorker and human being. Since then, the amount of cases has increased exponentially. But so too have the efforts made by our fellow New Yorkers: we’ve seen the workers and volunteers at the more than 800 food pantries in the city give selflessly to keep us nourished. We’ve seen neighbors step in to bring warm meals, medicine, and supplies to elderly citizens who need it most.
There’s so much we can do together, but we need Washington to do more.
ASPIRE’s mission is, as always, to support progressive candidates of color who will be strong advocates for our most vulnerable communities. We’re hard at work to ensure recently-naturalized citizens are registered to vote. Twenty-three million new Americans will be eligible to vote in November, and we’re going to help make their voices heard. We cannot let this happen again.
We’re working hard and we know you are too. Thank you for everything you’re doing right now to help us get through this. Every bit of it matters. And know if you’re scared, if you’re crying or shaking -- you are not alone. You never will be.
Grace
