Even though we are sheltering in place right now we wanted to take a moment to celebrate our birthday. That’s right, Americans for Safe Access was born back on April 19, 2002. It has been an eventful 18 years and we are so proud of everything that we have accomplished together. When ASA was founded patients, even in California, could not count on having safe and legal access to medical cannabis. Today, more than a dozen state governors have declared their medical cannabis programs to be an essential service. That is due to the hard work of medical cannabis advocates and we could not be more proud to have contributed to this movement.

It seems auspicious that our 18th birthday would fall on an election year, 18 being the age in which Americans can legally vote. Unfortunately, as medical cannabis advocates, we can’t just cast our vote and call it a day. Safe access for medical cannabis requires that we vote, and lobby, and advocate, and call, and write, and email, and sometimes demonstrate. Our advocates use every means available to show support for medical cannabis and we are always looking for new approaches to highlight our mission.

We are a member funded organization, meaning that most of our budget comes directly from individuals who believe in our mission and want to support our work. We are asking for your support again today. The economic downturn we are facing right now will be a scary time for many businesses and nonprofits organizations like ASA are no exception. We hope that we can rely on your continued support in the coming months. So please consider making a donation for our birthday today.
