The worst part of my job is asking people to contribute to my campaign. I hate how big money dominates our politics. The influence of corporate and dark money is undoubtedly a corrosive force on our democracy. But it’s why I’m so determined to do things differently — without PAC or corporate money.
My mission as a progressive Democrat in Washington is to shift power back to the people. I think we should level the playing field for our families. We should all share in the success of our economy — not just corporations and the top 1%.
But to go toe to toe with the special interests that protect a broken status quo, it requires significant resources — and the only way to raise those resources is for lots of regular people to give small amounts to our campaign.
It’s not easy to take on entrenched powers. Rocking the boat puts a target on me, but why bother running for office if you don’t want to do the difficult things that would actually improve people’s lives?
