He had complications from a rare double lung transplant he received last year, said Commissioner Bill Lowry, who said goodbye to Deer Sunday in the hospital with Deer’s family. “He’s more of a brother than a colleague,” Lowry said. “I’m going to do everything I can to continue the service he started on top of my own service. There won’t be a day I don’t think about him.” In a statement on social media, Commissioner Deer’s family said he died Sunday and that his “greatest joy and pride were his family” — his wife and high school sweetheart, Barbara, and his three children. Friends and colleagues remembered Commissioner Deer, 51, as warm, approachable and positive, someone who proudly wore his spirituality and spoke in “Deerisms,” or phrases he would often say, like ‘no doubt.” |

Originally published on dailyherald.com 06/28/2024 Cook County has received a record 54 achievement awards from the National Association of Counties, recognizing innovative, effective county government programs, officials announced this week. “These awards acknowledge the initiatives we have undertaken to ensure that our residents receive vital services and have the opportunity to thrive in our community,” County Board President Toni Preckwinkle said in the announcement. The awards include a “Best in Category” recognition for Cook County Health’s “Addressing Food Insecurity among Medicaid Members: FoodCare by County Care initiative.” The county also received awards for its Medical Debt Relief program, Property Tax Reform Group, and the Build Up Cook initiative, which helps under-resourced communities access infrastructure fund. |
