John, did you see my message?
John, I don’t want you to miss this – the Supreme Court has just issued a ruling whose consequences will be with us for years.
And much like Citizens United and Shelby County, it will majorly take power away from We The People – power over our lives, our communities, and even the air we breathe.
You’ll be hearing the legal term “Chevron deference” in the news today – in simple terms, it means that experts, not judges, should be the ones making government decisions.
It’s the idea that trained specialists at agencies like the Food and Drug Administration, the Environmental Protection Agency, or the Centers for Disease Control should be the authority on what is safe for our bodies or our environment – NOT courts that lack this expertise.
And this morning, 6 Supreme Court justices put an end to that practice, representing a massive power grab by the judicial branch at all of our expense – not to mention a huge gift to corporations afraid of any regulation that will hurt their bottom lines.
It’s a significant step forward in an extremist, decades-long plan to dismantle our government institutions, and block public servants from doing their jobs: protecting our health, our wellbeing, and our safety.
This Supreme Court is already under well-deserved scrutiny for multiple conflicts of interest and ethical lapses – this egregious power grab won’t help matters. Common Cause was founded to hold all branches of government accountable to the people, and we won’t stop now.
So, I’m reaching out today because we can’t let this decision get swept under the rug or lost in the partisan noise. This isn’t some legalistic, abstract idea – it’s a serious shift in how our government is able to represent and serve us, with serious real-life consequences.
And John, if you’re worried right now about what the next few years will look like, I’m hoping you’ll take this alarm bell seriously – and get ready to fight and work for the democracy we all deserve.
