You may have seen in the news this week that the Supreme Court ruled that hospitals in Idaho must provide emergency care to patients—including emergency abortions—even though the state has a near-total abortion ban.
While this week’s ruling means some patients won’t be forced to bleed out in hospital parking lots waiting for emergency medical care, make no mistake that this decision is a temporary reprieve, not a victory. There should be no question that protections in the federal emergency medicine law known as EMTALA include abortion care—which can sometimes be the only lifesaving option for pregnant patients in dire situations.
I will continue fighting to ensure that women can make the personal, private medical decisions that are right for them, free from government interference, regardless of where they live.
