Gov. Justice names two WVU astrophysicists Distinguished Mountaineers for their contributions to the scientific community

Gov. Justice named ([link removed]) two West Virginia University astrophysicists Distinguished Mountaineers for their globally recognized contributions to the scientific community.

Dr. Maura McLaughlin and Dr. Duncan Lorimer have recently been honored by internationally accredited organizations, bringing significant recognition to the State of West Virginia and WVU.

"I’m proud to be here to celebrate two very bright and inspiring professors," Gov. Justice said. "The strides made by Dr. McLaughlin and Dr. Lorimer in the science community are truly remarkable. In particular, their contributions at our state's flagship institution representing the State of West Virginia on the international stage make these achievements even more special.”

Gov. Justice visits Coopers Rock State Forest to see progress of state’s first stargazing cabins
[link removed]
Gov. Justice visited ([link removed]) a construction site at Coopers Rock State Forest to see the progress on the new stargazing cabins. The cabins will open this fall, and reservations will start being accepted on August 1st.

The new cabins are the latest projects on a list of more than $200 million of improvements made to our state parks system under the governor’s leadership.

“This is another exciting day for West Virginia with the addition of these incredible cabins," Gov. Justice said. "Coopers Rock State Forest is a gem within our state park system, and as we continue to draw visitors from around the world, it's important that we maintain and enhance its amazing condition and reputation. This stunning park is among our most frequently visited, and the projects we’re working on here will further put this forest on the map.”

The five new stargazing cabins are located along the main ridge between Raven Rock and the main overlook; seven more cabins will be added in spring 2025. The A-frame cabins will be perfectly positioned to provide guests the opportunity to enjoy one-of-a-kind stargazing opportunities of some of the Darkest Skies on the East Coast with the cabin’s fully equipped telescopes.

Gov. Justice announces SteppingStones receives $1.3 million to build fully inclusive playground at Mylan Park

Gov. Justice announced ([link removed]) that SteppingStones received $1.3 million, which will be used to build a new state-of-the-art, fully inclusive playground at Mylan Park.

SteppingStones ([link removed]) is dedicated to providing year-round recreation for children and adults with disabilities so that they can achieve their maximum level of independence.

"Babydog and I are so excited to celebrate with you, because you are getting that new playground," Gov. Justice said. "You deserve nothing but the best. You deserve a great place to play, laugh, and create memories with your friends, and this playground is going to provide just that. We are bringing this project across the finish line, and I couldn't be happier."

The playground complements the program's existing resources, including an indoor recreation area and "Miracle Field," a fully inclusive baseball and soccer facility.

First Lady Cathy Justice welcomes newest Friends With Paws therapy dog to Richwood Middle School
[link removed]
First Lady Cathy Justice visited ([link removed]) Richwood Middle School for an assembly to celebrate the arrival of the state’s newest therapy dog through the Friends With Paws program.

The dog introduced at today’s event is named Jax, and he is a Yellow Labrador Retriever.

“I am so excited to see Jax put his excellent skills to work here at Richwood Middle. The Friends With Paws therapy dogs are trained extensively to benefit everyone in the school, not only the students,” First Lady Cathy Justice said. “They can sense anxiety and stress in students and help deter those feelings so that they can focus on their studies rather than what they have going on at home. Jax will fit in just fine here at his new home, I can already tell how loved he will be.”

Gov. Justice announces West Virginia Sexual Assault Forensic Examination grant award

Gov. Justice announced ([link removed]) that he has awarded $150,000.00 in West Virginia Sexual Assault Forensic Examination (SAFE) grant funds to the West Virginia Foundation for Rape Information and Services.

Funding will be used to hire, retain, and train a statewide Sexual Assault Nurse Examiner (SANE) project coordinator who will provide technical assistance to SANEs and qualified medical providers; assist the Sexual Assault Forensic Examination (SAFE) Commission by reviewing training curricula, providing subject matter expertise, and participating in workgroups and activities as needed, and create training modules for qualified forensic examiners to meet the legislative rule requirements and training standards.
