I spent
last week in New York, campaigning for my movement brother Jamaal Bowman
as he faced a Westchester County executive in the most expensive House
primary race ever. I visited faith houses, festivals, and small
businesses, speaking to people about why his voice is sorely needed in
Congress.

Even in the 97-degree heat, hundreds of volunteers were out knocking
doors, calling voters, and getting out the vote for our pro-peace,
pro-humanity, pro-justice candidate.

Republican-funded super PACs reportedly poured over $20 million into
Jamaal’s race to make an example out of him. At one point, my team was at
a restaurant greeting voters and we saw eight attack ads in the span of 30
minutes. No one works that hard to unseat someone whose ideas aren’t
widely popular. Jamaal is a husband, a father, an educator, and an
effective legislator who leads with love and always centers the people.
His perspective will be missed in Congress next term, and it is a
collective loss for our caucus and country. But while I am dismayed that
we are losing his voice in Congress, we are not defeated.

This race showed that our progressive movement is under attack now more
than ever. In fact, my old colleague George Santos had this message for me
this week when I showed some love for my movement brother:
