Brady, in partnership with Casanova//McCann and the Ad Council, has released the FIRST EVER national public education campaign on safe firearm storage created specifically for Hispanic gun owners.
The campaign is called “Da El Siguiente Paso'' or “Take the Next Step,” and is aimed at reaching Hispanic gun owners, who are among the fastest growing demographic groups purchasing firearms. The latest available data shows that 20 percent of Hispanic people own a firearm, which amounts to approximately 10 million people. And with a 33 percent increase in firearm ownership among Hispanic adults since 2017 comes an increased need for public education on safe firearm storage.
In the United States, 4.6 million children live in a home with an unsecured firearm, and every day, 8 children are unintentionally injured or killed because of an improperly stored firearm. These devastating shootings are known as “family fire” – a shooting caused by someone having access to a gun from the home when they shouldn’t have it. Family fire includes unintentional shootings, suicide, and certain types of intentional shootings. But so many of these tragedies can be prevented with safe firearm storage.
Da El Siguiente Paso includes two new PSAs that demonstrate the real consequences of an improperly secured firearm. In the two videos, one in Spanish and one in English, two Hispanic fathers who are gun owners, not actors, share how they currently store their firearms and read letters written by parents whose children were killed in gun-related tragedies. The letter and the reaction of the parents emphasize the importance of safe gun storage.
Brady’s End Family Fire campaign has proven to be successful: According to an Ad Council study, 42 percent of respondents who are aware of the End Family Fire campaign and have a child in the home have reported seeking out information on safe gun storage in the past 12 months, compared to 10 percent of those not aware. | BREAKING: Surgeon General Declares Gun Violence as Public Health Crisis |
On Tuesday, June 25, the Surgeon General released a report that declared gun violence as a public health crisis in America. Brady’s This Is Our Lane National Advisory Council, which is chaired by Chief Medical Officer Dr. Joseph V. Sakran, previously called for the release of the groundbreaking report.
The creation of this report was one of the five key objectives of the This Is Our Lane Advisory council, a group made up of healthcare professionals working to prevent firearm injuries and deaths in America. |

Reports from the Surgeon General’s office are an essential tool for fighting public health epidemics, like gun violence, because they provide an evidence-based approach on how to solve these crises. Historically, we have seen how Surgeon General reports on public health issues, such as smoking, have ignited a wave of policy, legal, and public health initiatives. It is now time we do the same for gun violence.
The Surgeon General’s report details solutions that mirror Brady’s comprehensive approach to freeing America from gun violence. From advocating for a renewed push for an assault weapons ban, to expanding Brady Background Checks, and promoting safe storage, the report lays out a roadmap for all levels of government and the American public to band together to free America from gun violence.
The report also coincides with the release of Brady’s own public health analysis, reported by KFF, on the public health and economic impact of gun violence in the U.S. and the disparity in research funding between firearm injuries and other leading causes of death. |

Donor Spotlight: Bill Harwood |
Bill Harwood, a former member of Brady’s Board, has been a Brady donor and supporter since 1997. He has had a long and successful career as an energy lawyer in Maine and teaches a course about the Second Amendment at the University of Maine School of Law.
Bill had always made contributions to various gun violence prevention groups, but after the Columbine massacre in 1999, he was moved to do something more. In 2000, he founded Maine Citizens Against Handgun Violence, now known as the Maine Gun Safety Coalition, where he continues to serve on the Board. Shortly after, Bill ran for the public representative seat on Brady’s Board, where he served for ten years. Bill is frustrated by the fact that, though many people care about gun violence prevention, that care doesn’t always translate to making gun violence a key issue when voting. However, he is hopeful that in the coming years, it will become a top priority, leading to meaningful reform.
