Hawaii State House Representatives

HAWAII'S OFFICIAL STATE HAND GESTURE:
THE SHAKA
Hawaii has officially declared the "shaka" as its state hand gesture, becoming the first state in the U.S. to do so. The shaka symbolizes aloha spirit and local pride, passing unanimously in the 2024 legislative session. JOIN REPRESENTATIVE WARD AS HE TACKLES THE HOMEOWNERS INSURANCE CRISIS
This legislative session, alleviating the growing homeowner's insurance crisis was left on the table. Representative Ward is calling on his colleagues to hold a special session to address the issue, as found in his recent Civil Beat Op-Ed on the subject: [link removed]. In the meantime, Representative Ward will hold a town hall in Hawaii Kai next week, bringing together insurance industry experts and government officials to explain why we are in this situation and what can be done.
BILL SIGNING CEREMONY
Recently, Representative Pierick attended the bill signing ceremony held at the Capitol in the Governors' Ceremonial Room. He was there along with Representative Ward and other house and senate members. Governor Green signed bills that will soon become laws.
VERTICAL AVIATION INTERNATIONAL
The Vertical Aviation International (VAI) stopped by Representative Matsumoto's office to talk about everything their industry is doing to ensure their air tour operators are improving safety and community compatibility in Hawaii. They discussed VAI's efforts to improve safety rules and work closely with local groups. Their goal is to make sure their flights meet safety standards and meet the needs of the community.
GIVING A TOUR AT THE HAWAII STATE CAPITOL
Residents from District 39, Royal Kunia, and Waikele (Waipahu) visited the capitol. Representative Pierick gave them a tour of the building and showed them the Floor Chamber where he conducted speeches and voted on important bills.
IKE ELEMENTARY AT THE CAPITOL
Ike Elementary students visited the Capitol, and Representative Matsumoto had the opportunity to interact with them. She observed how engaged they were, particularly when she shared a cartoon activity book she created to explain the legislative process.
TEEN YOUTH CHALLENGE
Representative Pierick had the opportunity to meet with the Youth Challenged Cadets. He had the privilege of connecting with the cadets, who were graduating from the five-month-long program. They visited the Capitol and Peirick was delighted to give them a tour of the building and the House of Representative chamber.
369TH RECRUITING SQUADRON
Representative Matsumoto had the privilege of presenting certificates to the Air Force 369th Recruiting Squadron Pacific Recruiting Team. In 2022, they made recruiting history by enlisting the most Airmen and Guardians in the history of the volunteer Air Force with 568 enlistments. Their exceptional performance continued in 2023, as they remained the top-producing team. Thank you for your unwavering service to our country.
HAWAII STATE PRAYER
Representative Pierick attended the Hawai’i State prayer breakfast, along with other colleagues and friends. The prayer breakfast provided an opportunity to reflect on the problems of our state. We need to pray for statewide repentance which will lead to prosperity for our state.
HAWAII'S AFFORDABLE HOUSING
Representative Matsumoto was invited to discuss Hawaii's Affordable Housing, focusing on the condo insurance crisis. Many older condos lack full coverage due to high premiums and maintenance issues, hindering federally-backed mortgages and hurting owners and first-time buyers. I’m supporting new laws to stabilize the insurance market and offer alternative coverage, inspired by the Hawaii Hurricane Relief Fund. This crisis affects affordability and exposes individuals to predatory lending. Supporting these legislative measures is crucial for stability.
RECONNECTING WITH FRIENDS
Representative Pierick had the opportunity to reunite with an old friend and former Hickam lifeguard while at a UH Senior’s softball game. Pierick has known him for over 10 years and would surf at him at Hickam. Representative Pierick enjoys being out in the community and hearing directly from them.
KIPAPA ELEMENTARY SBA CELEBRATION

Representative Matsumoto was invited back to do her jump rope demonstration during Kipapa's SBA Celebration and assisted at the jump rope station. Watching the kids enthusiastically engage and try out some jump rope tricks filled her heart with joy. Moments like these, where she can share her passion and see the excitement in their eyes, are among her favorite parts of serving her community.
DISTRICT 39 GRADUATION CEREMONIES

Representative Pierick recently attended various graduation ceremonies, some of which were in his district. He was at the Kapolei High School graduation to celebrate the students and the Campbell High School graduation ceremony, where he reunited with council member Augie Tulba. He wishes the students the best of success as they continue their journey and education.

During their visit, they immersed themselves in the aftermath, gaining insights into the resilience and determination among the locals. By engaging directly with survivors of the Lahaina Wildfire, they asked pressing questions about the adequacy of government response, the effectiveness of communication efforts, and the development of a plan for the future.
