Letter from the Mayor

Dear Washingtonians,

In June, we celebrated progress “unsticking” big projects across DC; these are long-term projects that were once stuck but are now back to productive use for our community. It includes projects like the Reservoir Park Recreation Center and Aquatic Center in Ward 5 at the former McMillan Sand Filtration site. If you haven’t checked it out yet, I encourage you to — it’s beautiful. With a recreation center, indoor pool, spray park, and more, the site is back to productive use for the first time since 1986 and open to the public for the first time since World War II.

Reservoir Park

On the same day we cut the ribbon at Reservoir Park, we also cut the ribbon on a new playground at Sycamore & Oak at the St. Elizabeths East campus. Since opening last year, the Retail Village at Sycamore & Oak has welcomed more than 70,000 visitors to Ward 8 for shopping, dining, celebrating, and more. Next year, on that same campus, we will open the brand-new, full-service Cedar Hill Regional Medical Center GW Health.

Sycamore and Oak

The next week, we celebrated the grand opening of The Westerly, a new mixed-use development in the Southwest Waterfront neighborhood of Ward 6. The Westerly adds 449 new homes, including 136 affordable homes, to the neighborhood and moves us closer to our goal of 36,000 new homes by 2025.

The Westerly

And just last week, we broke ground on the final phase of the transformation of Skyland Town Center in Ward 7. Five mayors have worked on Skyland, and I’m proud that I’ll be the last. We’ve already delivered The Crest Apartments, new dining options and retail – including the District’s first Lidl grocery store, and now this third phase will deliver 126 for-sale townhomes, a 75-unit building for seniors that will be 100% affordable, more retail, and a public square and plaza.

Skyland

Part of my charge to my team when you gave me the privilege of being your Mayor in 2015 was to unstick stuck projects. We're making good progress and we didn’t get here by accident — we got it done by being strategic and working together.

Sincerely,

Muriel Bowser
