Friend, here’s what we believe:
It should be affordable and easy to access the internet and log on to work, stay informed, keep in touch with loved ones, create art, organize, attend online classes, and so much more.
Our media system should truthfully and factually represent what’s happening in our communities.
We should expect that our communications and internet activity are truly private.
Social-media platforms should do everything they can to remove discriminatory, hateful or false content.
However, according to a recent public-opinion poll we commissioned, a majority of Americans believe that our current media and tech ecosystem does not meet these basic standards.[1]
Our poll findings are a call to action, and we have a plan to turn the tide. But first, I have to ask: Will you make your very first gift to Free Press Action to help us hit our June fundraising target? We’re only 72 donations away, so yours could be the one that puts us over the top.

To respond to this overwhelming dissatisfaction with media and technology, we released the 2024 Media and Technology Policy Platform to guide candidates and policymakers seeking to uphold their constituents’ rights to connect and communicate with real actions they can take to make a difference.[2]
Here’s just a teaser of what we want them to hear:
*Close the digital divide.
*Pass comprehensive federal privacy and civil-rights protections.
*Don’t let the government buy people’s private information.
*Keep social-media platforms open for user-generated content while holding these companies accountable for the harms they themselves cause.
*Foster diverse media ownership and community-rooted solutions to the local-news crisis.
*Advocate for reparation proposals and reparative actions that redress the harms the media and policymakers have inflicted on Black people and Black communities.
The policy recommendations we make in the platform recognize the central role media and tech play in our daily lives. A just, accurate and equitable media system is vital to the health of our communities — and essential to a functioning democracy.
These beliefs are bipartisan and widely held. It's clear: Every elected official should favor policies that support a more open and inclusive media.
We rely on contributions from grassroots donors like you to fuel this urgent work. Make your first gift to Free Press Action to help us hit our June fundraising target.
