Dear John,

As the first openly gay person of color elected to the House of Representatives and a Co-Chair of the Congressional Equality Caucus, I am proud to witness the remarkable progress our nation—and the rest of the world—has made in advancing LGBTQ+ rights.

It has been one year since I reintroduced the Equality Act. Simply put, this legislation updates federal civil rights law to prohibit discrimination based on sex, sexual orientation, and gender identity in critical areas such as housing, education, and credit. Every single House Democrat has supported this piece of legislation, but Republicans have blocked even voting on the bill this Congress.

Last week, I talked about my journey to public office as being an out, gay candidate on Fox 11. I also spoke more about the Equality Act and how all LGBTQ+ people will be impacted by its passage.

Furthermore, I had the pleasure of leading time on the Floor of the House of Representatives to celebrate Pride Month. I was joined by my colleagues to celebrate and bring awareness to the triumphs our community has achieved. We also called out how House Republicans seem obsessed with putting the most vulnerable in our community in their crosshairs.

I had the great honor of attending the Inland Empire LGBTQ+ Center Grand Opening at Project Legacy in Riverside last week. This center will serve as a vital resource and support hub for our LGBTQ+ community throughout the Inland Empire. This grand opening marked the completion of a multi-year endeavor to provide life-saving housing and healthcare services on an innovative 49-bed community campus in downtown Riverside. I am proud to witness such progress and celebrate with everyone.
