John
The right to vote is basic to our democracy, but across the nation, it is under attack.
For almost 50 years, the Voting Rights Act had broad bipartisan support and was an unparalleled tool for guaranteeing access and combating discrimination in voting.
Since the Supreme Court gutted the Voting Rights Act in 2013, ending federal oversight of states with established histories of voter suppression, more than 100 state laws that restrict voting have been enacted.
These new state laws create particular barriers for voters of color. Dozens more are now under consideration by state legislatures, including 18 in North Carolina alone.
Further, we’ve seen the terrible results of Congressional maps being redrawn without the full protection of the Voting Rights Act. Even when courts have initially determined that legislatures have unlawfully deprived communities of color of representation, states are sometimes still allowed to use discriminatory maps for elections.
Ensuring that every American can cast their vote freely and fairly, no matter their income, race, or zip code, is the very cornerstone of our democracy.
The answer is clear: Congress must pass the John Lewis Voting Rights Advancement Act now. For democracy to work for all of us it must include all of us.
Send a message to your member of Congress demanding swift action to protect and expand our voting rights: Pass the John Lewis Voting Rights Advancement Act now.
The voter suppression laws that have passed have already created new obstacles to voting for: millions of voters across the country, especially voters of color, Indigenous voters, LGBTQ+ voters, voters with disabilities, young voters, and low-income voters.
The Brennan Center for Justice says that almost half the country will face new voting restrictions in the upcoming election.
Voting rights are basic to democracy because they are the basis for establishing all other rights and freedoms. The John Lewis Voting Rights Advancement Act will counter voter suppression in order to create a healthy functioning democracy.
Demand that your Congressional representative support and pass the John Lewis Voting Rights Advancement Act. Send your letter today!
Thank you for supporting this transformative legislation and urging your person in Congress to pass it right away.
Thank you,
