June 2024 Update From the Frontlines
Dear John,
Wow - we don’t know where to start! June has been action-packed as we launched a brand new ship the M/V Bob Barker with old and new friends in Los Angeles, took the first steps in a brand new campaign to protect one of the biggest reefs in the Western Hemisphere, launched a $150,000 Matching Gift Challenge so every gift automatically
DOUBLES<[link removed]>, sent a delegation to the White House to brief officials on our tireless efforts to protect the Vaquita, and so much more.
On Saturday, June 15, Sea Shepherd’s Board member James Costa hosted a reception at his Los Angeles home to pay tribute to Bob Barker’s memory and family. Guests joined to celebrate Bob’s visionary leadership on animal rights and we shared a briefing on the refitting required to equip the M/V Bob Barker for its new life as an ally of the ocean. Bob’s brother Kent shared heartwarming stories of Bob’s earliest activism on behalf of vulnerable animals, and longstanding Sea Shepherd’s supporters helped welcome new friends into our movement.

Then the action moved to Washington DC, where a Sea Shepherd delegation, for the first time, went to the White House on June 17th to brief officials on our partnership with the Government of Mexico to protect the world’s most endangered marine mammal, the Vaquita porpoise. We were joined by 2024 Vaquita Survey leader Dr. Barbara Taylor, and the team snapped this photo overlooking the storied West Wing.

2024 Matching Gift Challenge!
Discarded fishing gear entangles a sea lion, and it struggles to stay on the surface. A pilot whale gets herded into a cove in the Faroe Islands for nothing more than a slaughter for sport. These animals are the reason our captains and crews are out at sea every day, protecting that line between extinction and survival for these species and so many others. We can only do this work because of you. All our ocean conservation work is donation-driven so we can be laser-focused on protecting the ocean before it is too late. Please join our 2024 Matching Gift Challenge
HERE<[link removed]>, and every gift will be doubled thanks to the leadership and generosity of the Winifred Stevens Foundation and an anonymous donor. Help that sea lion and the pilot whale today by joining our
2024 Matching Gift Challenge so your donation is doubled!<[link removed]>

State of the Ocean Briefing
Sea Shepherd’s 2024 State of the Oceans Briefing presented a half-day of detailed updates on all Sea Shepherd campaigns on Tuesday, June 18. Guests included foundations, supporters, government officials and guests from multiple embassies and our dedicated supporters tuned in from around the world! After introductory comments by our CEO Pritam Singh and Mexican Ambassador Esteban Moctezuma, Dr. Barbara Taylor did a deep dive on the 2024 Vaquita Survey, our Director of Ship Operations Octavio Carranza briefed guests on the new M/V Bob Barker, Mexico Country Director Julian Escutia updated guests on our new campaign to protect the Alacranes coral reef in the Gulf of Mexico, and Stop The Grind campaign leader, Valentina Crast, shared a detailed briefing on our ongoing efforts to protect pilot whales and bottlenose dolphins in the Faroe Islands. We were honored to receive closing remarks about the future of ocean challenges by special guest former Secretary of State John Kerry, and DJI Director of Stakeholder Engagement Wayne Baker joined us in-person. The 2024 State of the Ocean Briefing was sponsored in part by
