LOGO [[link removed]]Hi John!
This week, many of us received stimulus payments of $1,200. While we thought that was the maximum payout, 43,000 millionaires received checks averaging $1.6 million. This comes from a loophole in the Coronavirus Aid, Relief, and Economic Security (CARES) Act that is paying out individuals with “pass-through” businesses.Washington Post [[link removed]] Now we know why Susan Collins defended this stimulus on the floor while Democrats fought for more benefits for Americans. Collins and her Republican colleagues wanted this stimulus pushed through fast with no questions asked so Democrats wouldn't catch this bait and switch.
Trump’s Treasury Secretary went on TV to say Americans could live off just one $1,200 payment making no mention of that fact that his wealthy buddies were getting a much larger payout. That money should be going to the 22 million Americans that have filed for unemployment, the tens of thousands of Americans who are ill from COVID-19, and our essential workers who are on the frontlines every day without proper protection.
Taking advantage of this crisis to pay out millionaires is disturbing, but it’s business as usual for Susan Collins. She’s not fighting for Mainers in the Senate, so it’s time we show her the door. I am running against Susan Collins, and together we will defeat her this November!
Thank you for being on my team!
In Solidarity,
Betsy Sweet
