Dear John,
Today marks a month until the July 28 presidential elections in Venezuela. Much can happen in this final stretch and even though the opposition seems set to win, a democratic transition is still far from assured. What is certain though is that Venezuela must prepare for what a democratic transition could look like. This week we wrote a short analysis on how addressing impunity for human rights violations will be key for the country’s future.
Also on Venezuela, in an open letter to the Minister of Penitentiary Services, WOLA, Amnesty International and others demand that Venezuela comply with its international obligations regarding torture and detention conditions at El Rodeo I prison, where many political prisoners have recently been transferred. The letter was quoted widely by the Venezuelan media including: El Nacional, Efecto Cocuyo, El Diario.
And finally, the recent report on migration that I researched with Adam Isacson last year in Colombia featured prominently in the press throughout the region this week. Here in El Tiempo (Colombia), La Nación (Argentina), and La Prensa (Panama).
All this and more in this week’s WOLA Weekly. |

"Migrants can no longer access the temporary protection status, unless they are children and adolescents enrolled in an educational institution. So, of course, people who are in an irregular migratory situation, who do not have access to employment, who have difficulties in accessing health care and so on, are forced to emigrate, and what we have been seeing and what the UNHCR, the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees, has been documenting, is a greater migration of people coming from other countries in the region". This interview is in Spanish.
