Dear John,
We are in real trouble when it comes to how our Virginia Elections are being run. We know that good people with good intentions sign up to be officers of the election and registrars. But sometimes, things go awry because the rules are not followed, and this affects the outcome of an election. We have found through our canvassing efforts that many things did go wrong in the conduct of this election.
For example, localities left their mail-in ballot drop boxes open and available to accept ballots well past the deadline of 7 p.m. on Election Day. There were no security cameras, and there were failures to maintain the proper logs documenting who/when/what regarding the emptying of those drop boxes. And, canvass observers were denied the lawful opportunity to witness and review essential canvassing functions.
These issues and more must be brought to the attention of our Virginia legislators. We must demand an end to mail-in voting (other than absentee ballots for those physically unable to vote in person). We must demand an end to 45 days of no-excuse early voting, and that proper ID is required. These are issues I have spoken about, and supported legislation to remedy, since I first ran for Congress in 2020.
We should all demand full transparency and accountability, and that is why we are pursuing this recount. In case you missed it, here is a video that was released from the Lynchburg canvass from an observer, demonstrating the failure to protect the integrity of the ballots in the largest city in the 5th District:
