Friend – We are all better off when we are all healthy. But while officials have taken steps to combat COVID-19, state and local law enforcement continue to funnel people into immigration jails, making attempts at flattening the curve a fool's errand. Save lives and tell Governor Gavin Newsom to stop transferring people to immigration custody.
Within the walls of Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) facilities, hundreds of people are jammed in close quarters with no way to social distance and with inadequate access to basic hygienic necessities. And staff, guards, and ICE agents return to their homes each night, increasing the risk of community spread. What's more, even in the midst of this crisis, some local bodies continue to pursue expanding detention centers for profit. The governor's response to COVID-19 and the support of immigrants in our state must extend to those at risk of detention. Under the California Emergency Services Act, he can stop all transfers to ICE from state prisons and call on local law enforcement to stop all transfers from state prisons and county jails. Take action and urge Gov. Newsom to use his authority and keep us all safe. Sincerely, Abdi Soltani |
