Biden and Trump spar in abysmal debate, Kamala gives forceful response
Folks, we're not going to sugarcoat this. President Biden needed last night to reassure people that his age wasn't a problem, and he did the opposite. It was a very bad performance. BUT... On the other side of stage stood a convicted felon and reality television performer vomiting up blatant falsehoods by the dozen and grossly distorting the most basic of facts. When he wasn't spewing ridiculous lies about immigrants, abortion, tax policies, and his mob of seditious rioters who attacked the US Capitol, Trump repeatedly refused to say he would accept the results of the election in November and promised a democracy-busting vengeance campaign should voters somehow look past his countless disqualifying characteristics and incomprehensibly hand him the keys to the Oval Office again. After the debate, Vice President Kamala Harris admitted that Biden had a "slow start" but brought things back into much-needed perspective in a tense interview with CNN's Anderson Cooper: “I got the point that you're making about a one and a half hour debate tonight. I'm talking about three and a half years of performance in work that has been historic... The Joe Biden that I work with every day is someone who, as I have said, has performed in a way that has been about bringing people into the Oval Office, Republicans and Democrats, to compromise in a way that is extraordinary these days." Let's remember one bad debate performance is not the end of the world — President Obama famously had a real dud in the 2012 cycle — and there's still a LOT of football left to be played.

VIDEO OF THE DAY: House Republican challenges Pete Buttigieg at hearing… fails MISERABLY
Time after time, Republican after Republican tries to go toe to toe with the Dept. of Transportation secretary and fails miserably. Yesterday, Rep. Scott Perry gave it the old college try and, well, roll the tape. "Given that time is limited, I will confine myself to addressing the factually incorrect portions of what you have said," Buttigieg said before eviscerating Perry's disingenuous right-wing talking points one by one.

McConnell plots to use election-denier to retake Senate
Ruben Gallego for Senate: Mitch McConnell will stop at nothing to retake the Senate, even if that means giving power to one of the most radical of Trump’s election-denying, democracy-threatening acolytes, Kari Lake. Her election lies helped spark the mob attack on January 6th and has even called for gun violence if Trump gets convicted of his crimes. This November, she'll be running against star Democratic Congressman Ruben Gallego, and it's on all of us to help Ruben ensure that Kari Lake never sees the inside of the Senate. Will you chip in to protect our Senate majority and elect Ruben Gallego?
Some Democrats looking for alternatives to Biden after troubling debate performance
Following President Biden's concerning debate performance last night, some Democrats are crossing the Rubicon in American politics and actively discussing what was once unspeakable: replacing a successful, sitting president on a major political party ticket. Strategists close to three potential Democratic presidential candidates said they had been bombarded with text messages throughout the debate. One adviser said they received pleas for their candidate to step forward as an alternative to the 81-year-old Biden. Another adviser said they had "taken no less than half a dozen key donors texting ‘disaster’ and [the] party needs to do something," but acknowledged that "not much is possible unless" the president voluntarily steps aside. At least two prominent potential 2028 contenders — Illinois Gov. JB Pritzker and California Gov. Gavin Newsom — said they stood by Biden even after his performance. Newsom, when pressed on MSNBC if Biden should step down, said that talk is "unhelpful" and "unnecessary." He added, "You don't turn your back because of one performance. What kind of party does that?"

Oklahoma state superintendent orders schools to teach the Bible in grades 5 through 12
Not to be outdone by fellow religious extremists in Louisiana, Oklahoma’s top education official and radical, right-wing ideologue ordered public schools across the state to incorporate the Bible into lessons for grades 5 through 12, the latest effort by conservatives to illegally incorporate religion into classrooms. The directive drew immediate condemnation from civil rights groups and, you know, people familiar with the Constitution and think the whole separation of church and state is a good thing. Republican State Superintendent Ryan Walters called the Bible an "indispensable historical and cultural touchstone" and demanded "strict compliance" with his draconian mandate, which he claimed is compulsory. Stand by for an onslaught of legal challenges that will eventually land before the Supreme Court. These people simply will not quit. And neither shall we.

DeSantis vetoes bill to bolster warnings about Florida’s polluted waters
Hellbent on staying in the news headlines for all the wrong reasons, Gov. Ron DeSantis vetoed a measure that would have increased warnings for Floridians and tourists when a beach or public waterway is polluted. The bill required the Florida Department of Health to issue health advisories if water quality failed to meet the agency’s standards and required closing polluted beaches "if it is deemed necessary to protect the health, safety, and welfare of the public." Not only was the bill bipartisan, it sailed through both the Florida House and Senate with unanimous approval. That wasn't enough for DeSantis, whose regulation allergy is so severe he felt compelled to go against the entire state Legislature, ostensibly because he thinks local municipalities should exclusively call the shots when it comes to closing beaches, but probably more so because he himself is a walking smokestack of toxic hot air and, well, that shit cannot be contained, people!
Former Uvalde school district police chief charged with child endangerment after shooting that killed 21
Pete Arredondo, the former police chief of the Uvalde Consolidated Independent School District who oversaw the response to the 2022 elementary school shooting that killed 21 people, including 19 children, was arrested on a child endangerment charge, an official at the Uvalde jail said Thursday. A second officer has been indicted on multiple similar charges, as well. Early this year, the Justice Department released a 600-page report that said poor coordination, training, and execution of “active shooter” protocols led to a “failure” in the response of the Uvalde officers who rushed to the shooting at Robb Elementary School on May 24, 2022. Instead of continuing to engage the 18-year-old gunman — who was locked in a classroom with 33 students and three teachers — officers retreated after an initial burst of gunfire and did not "push forward immediately and continuously to eliminate the threat," the Justice Department said. More than 70 minutes passed between the time officers arrived at the school and when the gunman was confronted and killed. In addition to the 19 students, two teachers were fatally shot, and 17 other people were injured.

Supreme Court blocks Purdue Pharma’s bankruptcy settlement that would shield Sacklers from lawsuits
The Supreme Court has rejected painkiller maker Purdue Pharma’s bankruptcy settlement plan that included an extraordinary measure to protect its Sackler family owners from further liability over the American opioid epidemic, in exchange for providing funds for compensation and rehabilitation treatment. The 5-4 decision, written by Justice Neil M Gorsuch, was backed by Justices Clarence Thomas, Samuel Alito, Amy Coney Barrett, and Ketanji Brown Jackson. The deal was constructed to allow Purdue, the Connecticut company behind the prescription opioid OxyContin, to restructure and also shield the relevant Sackler billionaires without them having to declare personal bankruptcy. The family agreed to contribute $6 billion to the settlement from the vast fortune they made from OxyContin and give up ownership. The court's ruling now leaves matters between the company and plaintiffs unresolved and will have lasting consequences for other corporate bankruptcies where company owners or officials want immunity from liability.
