Hey, it’s Ayanna Pressley. Help me out here. Last month, it was revealed that Justice Alito’s wife flew a flag associated with the “Stop the Steal” movement and January 6 insurrectionists at their home. When called out, he deferred. So I’m just trying to square this circle. Justice Alito claims he can’t tell his wife what to do when she wants to show solidarity with insurrectionists, but he can tell us what to do with our own bodies?
Make it make sense.
The Supreme Court is facing a crisis of legitimacy. It has been stacked with partisan, far-right justices hand-selected by conservative mega-donors, enabled by a man who was just found guilty on 34 counts of lies, cover ups, and withholding the truth. The Justices have released partisan decisions and substituted extremist, minority opinions for settled law. And they’ve repeated ethics violation after ethics violation by accepting lavish, secret gifts from right-wing mega-donors.
We can’t just sit by and let them undermine our democracy like this. So I’m fighting for:
If this issue wasn’t urgent enough, consider the damning link between the Court’s corruption and the far-right manifesto “Project 2025,” a 900-plus page document of extremist policies meant to destroy the federal government as we know it if Republicans win the presidency in 2024.
This plan contains everything from a national abortion ban to eliminating the Department of Education to mass firings of 50,000 federal civil servants to be replaced by partisan hacks — and it also has implications on the Judicial branch.
We can draw clear connections between the right-wing groups that have funded Project 2025 and the groups involved with the decades-long effort to stack the Court. In fact, that venn diagram looks more like a circle. The only way right-wing extremists will be able to ensure their policies are carried out is if the Supreme Court will back them — and we can’t just sit back and cross our fingers that they do the right thing.
Let’s get this done,
Ayanna
