Here's a quick update on what I've been working on during a busy few weeks in Washington, DC, Staten Island and Southern Brooklyn My friend, Here's a quick update on what I've been working on during a busy few weeks in Washington, DC, Staten Island and Southern Brooklyn... IN THE DISTRICT EAST SHORE SEAWALL CONTRACT ANNOUNCEMENT LEARN MORE Earlier this month I was pleased to announce that the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers awarded a contract for the first phase of the East Shore Seawall's construction, the drainage portion, putting an end to seemingly never-ending bureaucratic hurdles. As we enter yet another hurricane season, this award is welcome news for Staten Island residents and I'm proud to have played a role in getting this project back on schedule, full-funded and ready for groundbreaking. KEEPING UP THE FIGHT AGAINST CONGESTION PRICING The announcement by Governor Hochul to indefinitely postpone congestion pricing is a direct response to our lawsuits and immense political pressure from residents, businesses and common sense elected officials. While this welcome news and makes me extremely happy as someone who has been a leader in the fight against congestion pricing, we must stay vigilant and continue our legal and legislative efforts to stop this scheme and prevent it from being reimplemented in the future. READ MY OP-ED HERE 2024 CONGRESSIONAL ART COMPETITION WINNER I was proud to welcome Ivanna Trunova from Tottenville High School to Washington, DC, to celebrate her winning this year's Congressional Art Competition for New York's 11th Congressional District. Ivanna's piece, Finding My True Self, highlights her exploration of music and the discovery of her true identity and purpose. It will be displayed in the U.S. Capitol for the next year. I'm delighted she chose to share her talents with us and she should be extremely proud of herself for this outstanding achievement! READ MORE FIGHTING ANOTHER MIGRANT SHELTER Once again New York City is trying to illegally house unvetted migrants in our community in violation of its own zoning laws, this time in the Port Richmond neighborhood of Staten Island. We are doing everything in our power to stop it just like we did with planned shelters at St. John’s Villa Academy and Canterbury House. READ OUR LETTER HERE BAY RIDGE CANNABIS DISPENSARY WATCH I joined State Assemblymen Michael Tannousis and Alec Brook Krasny along with concerned Brooklyn residents to rally against a proposed 6,000 sq ft Cannabis Dispensary within close proximity to a dozen houses of worship and schools, including day care centers. We will not allow this deterioration of quality of life in Bay Ridge. HIGHLIGHTS FROM THE HILL MEETING THE DALAI LAMA While in India with a bipartisan congressional delegation, it was an incredible honor to meet with the Dalai Lama to discuss the recently passed Resolve Tibet Act and present him with gifts from Staten Island's Tibetan Museum that he visited more than 20 years ago. New York City is home to the largest Tibetan population outside of Asia, and I’ve been proud to work with the Tibetan community and a bipartisan group in speaking out against China’s human rights abuses and illegal occupation of Tibet. It's my hope that our advocacy brings the Tibetan people one step closer to being able to peacefully return to their homeland and determine their future. READ MORE ABOUT OUR VISIT HERE MIGRANT CRIME PLAGUING AMERICA'S CITIES Over the past several weeks, a number of American women have been raped or killed at the hands of those residing in our country illegally, including a thirteen year old girl in New York City. I took to the House Floor to bring attention to these heinous crimes and call on the Biden Administration to reverse its open border policies that are putting Americans' public safety at risk. HOLDING ANDREW CUOMO ACCOUNTABLE Our Select Subcommittee on the Coronavirus Pandemic conducted a wide-ranging transcribed interview with former New York Governor Andrew Cuomo regarding his administration's guidelines that forced nursing homes to take in COVID+ patients, leading to the preventable deaths of thousands of senior citizens. He tried to shift blame, but we will not let him skirt accountability. MY TAKEAWAYS FROM CUOMO'S INTERVIEW PROTECTING OUR YOUTH IN THE FOSTER CARE SYSTEM Our House Committee on Ways and Means recently held a committee hearing on ways to modernize child welfare programs so they better serve American families. I'm proud to support Paris Hilton's Stop Institutional Child Abuse Act and other commonsense solutions to increase transparency and protect our youth in the foster care system. We must do more to protect children from being abused, whether it’s in family, foster care or group homes. IN THE NEWS MALLIOTAKIS OP-ED: When It Comes To Gov’t Animal Abuse, Fauci Was Just The Tip Of The Iceberg Dr. Fauci’s wasteful spending on cruel animal testing was front and center recently as Congress grilled him on the COVID-era catastrophes he caused, from risky gain-of-function research to BeagleGate. At the hearing, Fauci defended paying for puppies to be de-barked and poisoned and admitted for the first time that he personally signed off on the taxpayer-funded animal cruelty that we’ve been fighting together since 2021. We’ve even successfully united Republicans and Democrats to criticize and cut Fauci’s funding for beagle abuse. READ MALLIOTAKIS OP-ED: Bipartisan bill will bring prescription drug costs down Imagine going to the doctor and being told you have a life-threatening condition that can only be treated with a daily dose of prescription drugs. You head to your local pharmacy (here on Staten Island, we’re lucky to have nearly four dozen), to pick up your medication, only to find out it’s either not available due to persistent shortages, or the price is double, triple or even quadruple what you had expected. For many families in New York City and across the country, this hypothetical situation has become a frustrating reality, with one third of American adults unable to afford their medications as prescribed...Making pharmaceuticals more affordable so you and your family don’t have to make the gut-wrenchingly unfair decision between purchasing groceries, paying rent, or potentially lifesaving drugs has been one of my top priorities since coming to Congress. There’s still work to be done, but in recent weeks I’m pleased to say that we’ve made significant progress toward addressing this issue. READ Rep. Malliotakis accuses city officials of concealing data on arrests made near in or near migrant shelters BROOKLYN CONGRESSWOMAN NICOLE MALLIOTAKIS is denouncing officials for what she says is concealing the number of illegal immigrants being arrested in and near migrant shelters, after this week's shooting of two NYPD officers being shot by Venezuelan national and Tren de Aragua gang member. The assailant had been residing at a migrant shelter in Queens. Rep. Malliotakis (R-11), who represents parts of southwestern Brooklyn and Staten Island, said that she and a bipartisan group of local elected officials sent a letter to NYPD Commissioner Caban last October, requesting information relating to migrant crime in New York City, and followed up in early January with a FOIL (Freedom of Information Law) after having received no response.
