Princess Anne, the sister of King Charles III, returned to her Gatcombe Park home on Friday morning, after a short stay in hospital where she was treated for minor injuries and a concussion, according to a royal source.
The Princess Royal, 73, was injured while walking near horses at the royal estate, in Gloucestershire, southwestern England, on Sunday evening. Anne will continue to rest and recover at home, returning to public engagements when her medical team recommends it is safe and comfortable to do so, the source told CNN.
Her husband, Vice-Adm. Tim Laurence, shared his gratitude to the medical staff for their care. He said in a statement, "I would like to extend my warmest thanks to all the team at Southmead Hospital for their care, expertise and kindness during my wife's short stay."
The exact circumstances that led to the Princess Royal's injuries were not clear, but there were horses in the vicinity and previously her medical team said her head injuries were consistent with a potential impact from a horse's head or legs.
Emergency services were sent to the estate and, after medical care at the scene, she was transferred to Southmead Hospital in Bristol for tests, treatment and observation.
CNN understands the princess has not been able to recall the details of what happened on Sunday evening due to her concussion.
While it's not known how long she will be convalescing for, she will be receiving rehabilitation support at home as she follows standard concussion protocols.
Anne is widely considered one of the hardest-working royals, dutifully undertaking hundreds of engagements each year. She is one of several senior royals who stepped up further to support the King when he briefly stepped away from public-facing duties following his cancer diagnosis.
The five-day hospital stay caused the princess to miss several engagements this week, including a state banquet at Buckingham Palace held for the Emperor and Empress of Japan on the first day of their state visit to the United Kingdom. She had also been due to travel to Canada for a royal visit this weekend.
Anne's accident is the latest in a series of health challenges the family has faced since the start of the year, with her brother Charles and the Princess of Wales continuing their cancer treatments. Sarah Ferguson, Duchess of York was also diagnosed with malignant melanoma in January.

King Charles hosted Japan's Emperor Naruhito and his wife, Empress Masako, for a three-day state visit that began on Tuesday. Charles and Camilla met the couple at Horse Guards Parade, where the emperor was invited to inspect an honor guard before the group traveled on to Buckingham Palace in a carriage procession. After a private lunch at the palace, the group viewed a special exhibition of Royal Collection items related to Japan before a lavish state banquet that evening, pictured. This was a visit that should have taken place long ago -- four years ago, in fact -- but was delayed in 2020 by the pandemic.

Prince Harry shares bereavement pain. |
Prince Harry has opened up about bereavement and grief during a conversation with the founder of a charity that supports children who have lost a parent serving in the British armed forces. "You convince yourself that the person you've lost wants you (to be), or you need to be sad for as long as possible to prove to them that they are missed," said the Duke of Sussex, whose mother, Princess Diana, died when he was 12 years old. "But then there's this realization of, no, they must want me to be happy," he told Nikki Scott, founder of Scotty's Little Soldiers, in a video released by the charity Thursday. It's nearly time for this year's swan census of the Thames River. Every year, a group of experts called Swan Uppers, led by the King's Swan Marker, travel along stretches of the river in rowing boats to assess the health of Britain's swan population. The Crown has owned all mute swans in open waters throughout the country since the 12th century, initially as they were an essential food for royal banquets. During the census, the King's Swan Marker counts the number of young swans, called cygnets, and examines them for injuries. "We are hopeful that the cygnet count will show an increase in numbers compared to 2023, although many cygnets seem rather small for this time of year," David Barber, the King's Swan Marker, said in a statement. This year's census will run July 15 through 19, finishing in Oxfordshire.

One of the largest ever collections of Princess Diana's possessions to hit the market smashed estimates and sold for a total of $5.5 million, alongside other royal memorabilia, Los Angeles auction house Julien's Auctions announced.
Composed of more than 50 items, the collection featured several of Diana's evening gowns, suits, shoes, hats and handbags, as well as personal letters and photographs. Memorabilia that belonged to other members of the British royal family, such as Queen Victoria, Princess Margaret and the Duke and Duchess of Windsor, also formed part of the auction, which closed Thursday.
A magenta silk and lace evening gown, featuring an off-the-shoulder bodice and tiered skirt, worn by Diana twice in 1987, proved the most expensive lot of the night, selling for $910,000, more than four times its estimate of $200,000. Its designer, Victor Edelstein, also created the famous off-the-shoulder, midnight blue velvet evening gown Diana wore while dancing with John Travolta at the White House.
