Health Equity Research Spotlight: Housing Vouchers Improve Physical Health

The study found that individuals in families who received a voucher were 50% less likely to have high blood pressure, 90% less likely to report home heating issues, 80% less likely to miss a rent payment and 40% less likely to lack sufficient living space. They were also five times less likely to feel unsafe in their neighborhood. By reducing the burden of expensive housing, Housing Choice Voucher (HCV) programs lead to better financial stability, lower stress levels and improved child health and educational outcomes. Illinois Legislature Provides A Roadmap For Progress With Its State-Level Community Reinvestment Act

While long-awaited federal updates to a key nationwide economic justice policy are tied up in court, progress is continuing elsewhere: Illinois has finalized its state-level version of the Community Reinvestment Act (CRA). Banks, Consumer Groups Tell US Regulators to Unify Merger Plans

Consumer advocates want the OCC to rescind Trump-era changes to the use of Community Reinvestment Act, a 1978 anti-redlining law, to inform merger reviews. “The OCC’s proposed rule does not rescind harmful changes to merger application procedures adopted during the tenure of the former Comptroller Joseph Otting,” the National Community Reinvestment Coalition said in an April 23 letter.
