Your bite-size run-down of yesterday's key events

Elephant addressed

There was no escape from the topic of Brexit for Jonathan Reynolds at the British Chambers of Commerce’s annual conference, where the issue of the UK’s trading relationship with the EU was front and centre. Addressing hundreds of suited business leaders, he insisted that Labour “will and can do better” on UK-EU relations. Well it would be hard to do much worse than the current lot! His speech followed BBC chief Shevaun Haviland who urged politicians to “stop walking on eggshells and start saying it how it is” on Brexit.

Tetchy Rishi returns

Sunak was grilled on the details of the betting scandal and it all got a bit prickly. Sky’s Sam Coates asked Sunak multiple times if he had told his aide Craig Williams - who has admitted to placing a bet on the timing of the election - the date of the election before he put a wager down. Sunak tried to avoid the question claiming that he can’t compromise ongoing investigations into the issue. Coates was quick to point out that unlike a trial, you can’t prejudice an investigation.

Sun scoop confirmed

Still on the topic of Gamblegate, the Met Police confirmed the Sun’s scoop that the force will take a bigger role in the election betting investigation. It’s going to look into potential misconduct in public office offences, while the Gambling Commission focuses on cheating.

Economist endorses

The Economist has come out in favour of Keir Starmer. The paper has not backed Labour since Tony Blair ran for a third term at the 2005 election.

11th time lucky

Junior docs in England began a five day strike over pay amid concerns that a stoppage so close to the General Election is an ‘own goal’. This is the 11th walkout in their long-running pay dispute.
