Dear John,
Burundi is an East African country and considered the poorest nation in the world.
The culprit is an authoritarian government stifling economic freedom and personal agency.
For example, take the story of Nasra Nsabimana, a woman in Burundi who makes a living trading goods like bottled water across the border to the Democratic Republic of Congo.
As a trader, she had to face exorbitant paperwork, permits, and fees to start her business. As a woman trader, she’s also risked sexual assault at the hands of corrupt government agents.
But thanks to an Atlas Network partner in Bujumbura, women like Nasra now only need a single, no-cost document to trade legally.
That partner is Centre for Development and Enterprises Great Lakes (CDE), and they’ve been advocating for free enterprise and personal freedom in Burundi since 2017, even in the face of consistent threats and intimidation.
CDE started with a modest $2,000 grant courtesy of the Atlas Network Think Tank Startup Grant program.
They’ve continued to grow and deliver wins ever since.
Their policy achievements have twice been nominated for the Templeton Freedom Award, and they’ve been invited to join the Atlas Network Smart Bets program, reserved for partners who consistently punch above their weight and achieve major changes advancing free enterprise.
They’re one of the best examples of how a small grant can become an enormous win for personal liberty and change the lives of thousands on the other side of the world.
Partners like CDE – those that achieve big results with humble beginnings – are part of the inspiration for our end-of-quarter fundraising drive.
Modest donations can make a big impact, and that’s why we’ve set our goal to find 100 new friends who will support Atlas Network with a $10 monthly gift.
Only two days remain to make your first contribution and take advantage of our end-of-quarter match offer.
Please join us by sending a gift of $10 per month, and help partners like CDE advocate for free enterprise in some of the most challenging places in the world.
Our generous matching donor will double each and every one of your recurring gifts for a full year.
We hope to see you inside the Atlas Network donor community!
Thank you,
Vale Sloane
