Here’s what’s at stake:

Enforcing methane regulations to fight climate change (and help families breathe). Methane regulations approved in 2023 could reduce federal emissions by 58 million tons in the next 14 years. But only if they’re enforced!

We’re fighting bills in Congress that would roll back methane regulations and allow companies to continue releasing the leading cause of climate change into the air.

There’s more action we’re fighting for this summer:

Halting new methane gas exports and offshore oil terminals. In early 2024, the Biden Administration paused new LNG (liquefied “natural” gas) terminals until it is determined that they are in the public’s best health interest. This was a sign of the impact you and our grassroots partners like RISE St. James and The Vessel Project have had. It’s a pause that needs to be permanent! And we need similar protections against exporting crude oil - there are at least four deepwater crude oil export facilities under review or recently authorized by the Department of Transportation.

Reform the 1872 Mining Law. Communities have too little power to shape mining projects that can destroy their land, air and water. Reforming the mining law is work that’s needed now - especially with the energy transition demanding new mined minerals.

And here are actions the Biden administration can take this summer:

Create new rules to provide additional rights for Tribal cultural and sacred sites;

Make changes to existing regulations that update mine performance standards, reducing environmental harm and ensuring community safety;

Implement a requirement to include climate adaptation plans during mine planning;

Construct new rules to expand engagement with communities during and outside of mining planning and NEPA processes.
