Dear Friend,

The Fourth of July is a good time to reflect on our American values of freedom and independence, which come with responsibilities. We all have a responsibility to safety – our own safety and the safety of others.

During the summer months, time spent on the road increases, making it critical to be vigilant, safe, and respectful of the laws, our own personal limits, and the lives of others with whom we share the roads. In 2022, there were 487 people killed in motor vehicle crashes over the Fourth of July holiday period – 40% were killed in a drunk driving crash (NHTSA, FARS data, 2022).

Drunk driving is a choice and is 100% preventable.

As you prepare to celebrate Independence Day, do so with respect and care, and remember that safety starts with each of us. Join Responsibility.org as we continue our mission on the road to end drunk driving.

Before heading out, download our Virtual Bar calculator to safely understand how alcohol will affect your BAC - plan to be safe and responsible before you take your first sip!

Not every drink contains the same amount of alcohol, so make sure you know how much you’re drinking. A standard drink—whether it’s a 12 oz beer, a cocktail containing 1.5 oz of spirits, or a 5 oz glass of wine—contains the same amount of alcohol.

If you’re heading out to a BBQ, to watch fireworks, or anywhere where alcohol is being served, plan for a safe ride home. Schedule a ride share in advance, appoint a designated driver, volunteer to be the designated driver, or take public transportation.

One in every three traffic fatalities involved a drunk driver in 2022. (NHTSA, 2022 FARS data, 2024)

In addition to making plans for yourself, don’t let any impaired friends behind the wheel, either.

Parents, emphasize the importance of safety to your teen drivers.  Always model responsible behaviors, and talk to them about safety, values, and expectations.

And don't give underage drinking an excuse. Never supply alcohol to anyone under the legal drinking age. It’s illegal, unsafe, and irresponsible.

We are proud to have you as part of our community that takes pride in our freedoms, is dedicated to safety, and aims to be responsible not only for yourself but your own family and your fellow Americans.

From all of us at Responsibility.org, happy 4th of July!

Responsibility.org leads the fight to eliminate drunk driving and underage drinking and promotes responsible decision-making regarding beverage alcohol.
