John, take a look at a few of the headlines to come out since progressive champion Rep. Jamaal Bowman lost his primary against an AIPAC-backed career politician on Tuesday:
There’s no doubt: we lost a powerful voice for everyday people in Congress this week, and we need to rally together now to stop it from happening again.
We’re rushing to build the grassroots resources needed to re-elect Justice Democrats incumbent and Squad member Cori Bush in her August primary against another one of AIPAC’s hand-picked challengers. Can you rush $5 now to fuel our fight?
There are a lot of hot takes out there about what led to this devastating loss, but here are the three key takeaways from the most expensive primary in U.S. history:
- AIPAC, its super PAC, and other right-wing outside groups used our broken campaign finance system to funnel more than $20 million from Republican millionaires and billionaires into this primary against a Democratic incumbent.
- Gerrymandering took a toll here as well, with Jamaal’s district shifting to include fewer voters in the Bronx and more in Westchester suburbs. While Jamaal’s opponent won 69% of the Westchester County vote, Jamaal secured a massive 84% majority of voters in Bronx County. This district was purposefully cut to exclude Black and brown voters from it.
- If AIPAC and George Latimer’s platform was so popular, it wouldn’t have taken a historical amount of dark money for them to win this seat. Our progressive, people-powered movement is a threat to the status quo, which is why they had to spend so much to defeat us in this race.
With a little over a month until Cori’s primary, we can’t sit around and let AIPAC oust another member of the Squad with their war chest.
Unlike AIPAC, we are powered by people like YOU. Please pitch in any amount today to support our work to re-elect Cori, protect the Squad, and stop AIPAC from setting our progressive movement back.
