Last week, Animal Outlook’s legal advocacy team successfully convinced a judge to reconsider his own decision to dismiss our case against the American Heart Association (AHA). Soon, we’ll be back in court to again make our case: The AHA is going against its own science by selling its heart healthy logo to the beef industry. We need your help to put a stop to these misleading practices.
In 2022, Animal Outlook filed a lawsuit against the AHA over the organization’s use of its “Heart-Check” certification mark on certain meat products that purveyors pay the AHA to use. As recently as August 1, 2022, an official peer-reviewed journal published on behalf of the AHA recognized that “higher meat intake [is] associated with atherosclerotic cardiovascular disease [ASCVD].” That same journal also acknowledged “biochemical links between dietary meat and ASCVD.”
However, the AHA allows companies to display the “Heart-Check'' mark on certain meat products and market them as “heart healthy” in exchange for a fee. These misleading paid endorsements are confusing to the public and undercut the truth we’ve known for years: we need to build a vegan world to protect animals. Being vegan is one of the best things you can do for animals, your health, and the planet.
Animal Outlook is determined to hold the AHA accountable for misleading the public by selling its goodwill and public trust to the meat industry. With the courts recently reversing the dismissal of our case, we’re set to continue this fight, but we need your help.
