Note From the Chair
Friend,
If you haven’t heard, towns in northwest Iowa like Rock Valley, Spencer, Humboldt and Sioux City are under water right now. Portions of the state were hit with devastating amounts of rainfall last week, and they really need our help.
I put together a list of helpful things to know and ways you can help fellow Iowans who have lost their homes, businesses and ways of life.
Iowa Disaster Recovery Website [[link removed]]
This website provides information regarding available state and federal assistance programs, information on how to volunteer in any of the affected communities, ways to donate and more.
Rock Valley [[link removed]]
Flood victims and families can pick up needed items like clothing, shampoo, blankets, food and more at the Boyden-Hull Community School at 801 1st. St. in Hull. Volunteers are still collecting some donation items like bath towels, dish soap, and work gloves. Click here to see a list of needed donation items [[link removed]] .
Spencer [[link removed]] To help victims of the floods, monetary donations are being accepted at Two Banks in Rock Valley [[link removed]] , and the Spencer Chamber of Commerce Foundation [[link removed]] . The Salvation Army is helping with flood clean-up and feeding victims. Donate to them by clicking here [[link removed]] . The Red Cross also has several shelters open in town. A shelter is open at the Spencer Events Center, 800 W. 18th St. Transportation is being provided by Iowa Lakes Community College.
A tetanus clinic is open at the Spencer Hospital, Entrance B. It is reccomended if you have not had a tetanus shot in the last five days to get one.
Humboldt [[link removed]]
Residents are being asked to help conserve water to better help the new pumps at the lift station handle increased pressure on the city’s sanctuary sewer system. Some suggestions for emergency water conservation include:
• Limit laundry and dishwasher loads to only when absolutely necessary
• Limit house cleaning with water
• Limit shower time as much as possible, take showers instead of baths
• Limit outdoor water use including law and garden watering, car washing or outdoor play
• Outdoor water use will put added pressure on the storm sewers
Sioux City [[link removed]]
A disaster recovery center has been set up and will be open today, June 27th, at River Valley High School from 11 a.m. to 6 p.m. Citizens will be able to walk through and speak with different agencies to see what help is available.
Iowa Concern Hotline [[link removed]] An Iowa concern hotline number is available to help anyone dealing with stress from the floods. The hotline can be reached toll-free at 1-800-447-1985. There are also live chat capabilities and more available at ISU Extension’s Iowa Concern website [[link removed]] .
This hot line can help people learn about their legal rights, discuss financial concerns, find mental health assistance, and answer questions. The hotline is available 24 hours a day, seven days per week at no charge.
Thank you so much for supporting your fellow Iowans.
Sincerely,
Rita Hart
