**THE FORUM DAILY**Three migrants drowned and several others were rescued from the waters of the Rio Grande in El Paso, Texas, on Tuesday, reports Julian Resendiz of Border Report [link removed].??
U.S. Customs and Border Protection reports 102 migrant deaths and 712 rescues this fiscal year in the El Paso Sector. That's up from the same period in 2023, when 67 deaths and 278 rescues were reported.??
"We've been saying that migrants were going to take alternate dangerous routes to reach safety in the U.S.," said Alan Lizarraga of Border Network for Human Rights, referencing the recent Biden administration border restrictions.??
Separately, Laura Barro??n-Lo??pez, Saher Khan and Ali Schmitz of PBS NewsHour [link removed] get insights on the border situation and a call for solutions from Sheriff Mark Dannels of Cochise County, Arizona, and El Paso immigration attorney Jennifer Babaie.??
"I think we need to support bipartisan laws, measures and reform. I truly do," Dannels said. " ... [L]et's do this collectively with our federal government. And let's do it right."??
Cochise County is part of the Tucson border sector, which Homeland Security Secretary Alejandro Mayorkas visited yesterday. He announced that encounters along the entire southern border have decreased more than 40% since the new border restrictions took effect early this month, reports Sarah Lapidus of the Arizona Republic [link removed]. Mayorkas restated that Congress still needs to act.??
Some migrants who might be eligible for asylum have not been able to access the process, Lapidus notes. At its shelter in Nogales, Mexico, Kino Border Initiative "saw 78 people deported without being referred to an interview with an asylum officer, 16% of them children ages 5 and under," in the three weeks after Biden's action took effect, she reports.??

FIRST DEBATE - Ahead of tonight's debate, Benjamin Oreskes of the Los Angeles Times [link removed] adds to the analysis of where the presidential candidates stand on immigration. In Jennie's words from yesterday [link removed], "Americans want lasting border and immigration solutions, no matter the political narratives the candidates employ. Voters want [link removed] who??offer??border and immigration solutions that combine security, order and compassion and avoid rhetoric that criminalizes,??dehumanizes??and foments fear."??
**'BUILDING LIVES'**??-??Based on a decade of immigration court data, a team at The Washington Post [link removed] analyzed the distribution around the country of 4.1 million immigrants who have or have had pending cases. Among other things, the graphics help demonstrate shifts in migrant demographics. "Their legal status in America remains unresolved, but they are already building lives: many are taking low-wage jobs, sending children to school and relocating to communities across the United States that have not been traditional immigrant destinations," the team writes.??
KEY WEST -??Nearly 120 Haitian migrants, including children, arrived by sailboat in Key West yesterday morning after a week at sea, report David Goodhue and Jacqueline Charles of the Miami Herald [link removed]. A similar arrival in Key West last occurred in February 2023. Advocates are asking state and federal authorities "to provide humane treatment and support to the arriving Haitian migrants" amid continuing chaos in Haiti, and they want DHS to renew Temporary Protected Status for Haitians already in the U.S.??
GROWING INDUSTRY -??Employers in the growing semiconductor industry are having trouble filling positions, and the immigration system is limiting their options, reports Elizabeth Trovall of MarketPlace [link removed]. "We rely heavily on the H-1B program across the industry," said John Cooney of the Semiconductor Industry Association. Government incentives are helping, but immigration could help more, Trovall reports.??

P.S. "A growing cohort of pizzerias [is] inspired by the food of countries other than Italy," Brett Anderson of The New York Times [link removed] reports, and we wish we could try them all.??
