Dear John,
Today, the Supreme Court refused to confirm that long-standing federal emergency care protections include abortion when needed to protect a women’s health, fertility, or life. This means that doctors will continue to have uncertainty on whether they can do their jobs without the threat of criminal prosecution in states where nearly a third of American women live.
As an emergency physician, I cannot stress how concerning this decision is. This ruling is a grave step backward for reproductive rights and healthcare access. It undermines our ability to provide comprehensive emergency care and threatens the autonomy and safety of patients in crisis. For thousands of women every year, abortion care is a matter of life-or-death.
