When Edward’s wallet containing his Alabama state ID was stolen out of his car, he wasn’t able to get a job or receive government benefits — and he couldn’t vote.

He spent five years in a bureaucratic nightmare. [[link removed]] “I attempted to get my ID 20 or so times but I would always get stopped at the door,” he told me.

“They wanted me to have three forms of primary ID and one of those forms is a government ID, which is what I was trying to get! I was going in circles. It was a horrible experience.”

Luckily, Edward got connected to VoteRiders when he heard a PSA on the radio about the free ID help we provide.

Even with VoteRiders staff and volunteers helping Edward, it took a lot of time and ingenuity to get Edward’s ID.

Ultimately, VoteRiders helped Edward get a notarized copy of his birth certificate and advised him to get a replacement Social Security card by having Edward’s elderly mother sign a form that allowed him to secure his Social Security card without a government-issued ID.

“The biggest service VoteRiders provides is having your back,” he said. “VoteRiders gave me an inner peace, a new fighting spirit.”

Now that Edward has an ID, he’s able to get a job and vote. In addition, he was able to travel to Chicago to attend his son’s graduation ceremony.

“More people need to know about VoteRiders. I’m just so happy that I heard that radio ad — I only heard it one time — I’m just so happy. Thank you, VoteRiders, for not leaving anybody out of this process.”
