Welcome to the June issue of COPE Digest.
We begin this issue with an editorial Can we make English-language publishing more accessible ([link removed]) written by the COPE Diversity, Equity, Inclusivity, Accessibility (DEIA) subcommittee in conjunction with some of our global members and contacts. They explore some of the potential barriers faced by people communicating in a second or additional language, and collate a range of positive actions for the scholarly publishing industry.
Responses from COPE Members accompany the editorial with further insight into publishing in English:
* Increasing research output brings new pressures for authors writing in English as an additional language.
* We must look again at peer review to tackle bias against authors with English as an additional language.
* A cycle of challenges: a view from Colombia.
* There are no quick solutions, but AI development, professional editing, and educational reform can contribute to closing the gap.
* Scholarly publishing is not a philanthropic venture.
* Challenges for Indian researchers getting published in high impact journals.

NEW: CONCURRENT SUBMISSIONS OF A MANUSCRIPT TO MULTIPLE JOURNALS
This guidance helps editors who have been informed that a manuscript submitted to their journal has also been submitted to other journals at the same time. The flowchart includes who to contact and what action to take, such as:
* the review should be suspended while an investigation takes place
* manuscripts should be compared to identify how much content overlaps
* where there is evidence of repeated fraudulent behaviour refer to COPE guidance on systematic manipulation of the publication process
* a journal's instructions to authors should include a policy on concurrent submissions.

** UNITED2ACT RELEASE NEW RESOURCES

COPE Trustee, Deborah Kahn, spoke at the World Congress on Research Integrity (WCRI) with an update on United2Act. Deborah announced the release of new resources by United2Act working groups.
University World News published a special report on the WCRI. An article End paper mills menace to protect research integrity on paper mills ([link removed]) , included a quote from Deborah: “We are united, and we are acting. We are not one of those groups of people who talk and do nothing”.
United2Act, a project from COPE and STM, is a group of international stakeholders working collaboratively against paper mills.
NEW RESOURCES ([link removed]) >
ADVISORS
We are pleased to announce the launch a new role for COPE volunteers who will share their expertise and interest in areas of publication ethics, or particular regions, to support COPE's mission. We are launching the role of Advisors with a small number of volunteers who are already working with us and hope to expand the scheme more widely in the coming months. The role is a way to participate in COPE's work without the specific expectations of Trustees or Council Members.

We are delighted to announce Publication Integrity Week 2024. This week-long series of events will feature insights from across the publication integrity spectrum from sessions on good publication ethics practice to discussions on issues challenging research publishing.
