John –
Several weeks ago, Republican members of the Texas House made a big splash in announcing they had signed the “Texas Conservative Commitment.” At a glance, the agreement appears to reflect much of what conservative grassroots activists have said they want done in 2025.
Yet, their "commitment" is a watered-down version of a pact made between what conservative lawmakers have already put forward… and a weakening of what activists have said they want.
The “Contract with Texas.” meanwhile, is a series of 12 proposed House reforms aimed at ending power-sharing with Democrats. It has garnered the signatures of 21 current and incoming lawmakers, many of whom represent the grassroots movement that achieved widespread success in this year’s primary election cycle.
There has been growing recognition that GOP power-sharing with Democrats must end if there is to be any chance at advancing meaningful conservative legislation in 2025.
The contrast between the “Contract with Texas” and the “Texas Conservative Commitment” is significant. On one hand, you find 21 lawmakers responsive to the grassroots targeting the root of policy problems in the Texas House. On the other hand, we find 26 GOP politicians doubling down on their willingness to let Austin lobbyists and Democrat lawmakers hold powerful positions in the legislature.
