In the eastern European country of Georgia, the authoritarian government aligned with the Kremlin has implemented an anti-free speech law to silence pro-freedom organizations.
It’s known as the “Foreign Agents Law.”
Georgia wants to force organizations like our partners, who regularly critique the government and call for pro-liberty reforms, to label themselves as “foreign agents.”
In essence, Georgia wants to force our partners to declare that they are spies working on behalf of foreign governments.
The problem is, this isn’t true in the slightest.
It’s just an attempt by the government to suppress freedom of expression and stigmatize pro-freedom groups.
Fortunately, an increasing number of Georgia citizens are pushing back, led by the country’s youth.
They’ve protested the “Foreign Agents Law” in the streets and online, clashed with law enforcement, and regularly face attacks and propaganda from the government.
Their efforts saw early success, as the proposal failed twice to pass and become law before it was finally implemented earlier this month.
Atlas Network continues to stand with our partners in Georgia in support of free speech, but we can only do it with the sustained generosity of our donor community.
