Dear Valued Supporter,
If you are receiving this email, it is because you are a cherished supporter of Breast Cancer Action. Thank you for your unwavering commitment to addressing and ending the breast cancer crisis.
We have an important update to share with you about the future of our organization:
The Breast Cancer Action board of directors has made the difficult decision to close our organization at the end of 2024. This decision stems primarily from a shortfall in donations, a trend affecting many nonprofits nationwide. Over the past four years, we have experienced a 33% reduction in income.
We will have more to say about our closing in the next six months. But before we go we have one more campaign to wage! Breast Cancer Action will work with the Campaign for a Safe and Healthy California to protect communities from neighborhood oil drilling and to uphold California’s Senate Bill 1137. This bill became law in 2022, thanks to a decade of work by community environmental activists and grassroots organizations, BCAction included! Senate Bill 1137 mandates a 3,200-foot “setback” between oil and gas drilling and sensitive sites like homes, schools, and playgrounds, and it was hard won by our coalitions. Since its passage, Big Oil has spent millions to overturn this common-sense law, which will culminate in the vote on the referendum during California’s November election. We know that fossil fuels are linked to breast cancer, a fact the fossil fuel industry continues to ignore. We are determined to push back on this blatant attempt to subvert democracy, and we are determined to prioritize public health over oily profits.
To make the work of the next six months possible, Breast Cancer Action has begun a transition to a volunteer-run organization. Breast Cancer Action will spend the next six months as it began—taking a stand through grassroots organizing and passionately refusing to allow health risks be ignored while corporate greed persists. Our ongoing work will be carried out by volunteer leaders who have been involved in our organization throughout our history, and we are committed to making this transition while living our values of transparency, accountability, and prioritizing the health and wellbeing of all involved.
We are so grateful to all of those who have served as staff and board members, participated in our fundraising activities, and supported us as donors and volunteers. We say—keep an eye out for our final campaign to speak truth to power, and thank you!
Thank you for supporting us, for partnering with us, and for your ongoing activism to address and end this disease. We are so deeply grateful for each and every person who has contributed their time and money for the past 34 years.
You’ll hear more about our upcoming campaign in the coming weeks from the new board and volunteers. If you have any questions, please contact us at [email protected].
With gratitude,
The Breast Cancer Action Board of Directors
