** Canvassing safely in the Central Valley
------------------------------------------------------------
As volunteers work to inform voters in the Central Valley about the stakes of the election and what their choices are, the weather is getting hotter and hotter as the state rolls into summer. Highs in the 13th and 22nd Congressional districts can easily be in the 90s or even 100s.
So it’s important for canvassers to take care of themselves, and look out for each other, and for those organizing them to take care of them. Our friends at the Bay Area Coalition have been doing just that: They’ve knocked on more than 20,000 doors so far, with many more ahead, and they’re making sure their volunteers are staying safe in the summer heat—including by sending “cooling cars” with water, fresh fruit, sunscreen, and other supplies.
Read about these efforts and how you can help in the California Grassroots Alliance’s new blog post ([link removed]) .

Thinking of going electric? Here are resources that can help
------------------------------------------------------------
By now, you know the importance to a livable climate of getting off of fossil fuels as much as we can, as fast as we can. You want to do your part and switch to the growing variety of electric alternatives.
But perhaps you’re not sure whether those alternatives will work for you, or you don’t want to plunk down a bunch of money on a maybe. Or you’re ready to make the leap to an electric car, but the price is still too high to fit your budget.
The State of California, the City, and PG&E are offering rebates and other programs to help bring down the barriers to entry so you can electrify your life.

Get back the deposit you paid for recyclable beverage containers
------------------------------------------------------------
In California, whenever you buy recyclable beverage containers such as aluminum cans or various sizes of plastic bottles, or multi-packs of either, you pay a surcharge known as the California Redemption Value. This is technically a deposit; you’re supposed to be able to redeem the empty containers and get that deposit back. (In practice, it’s often more trouble than it’s worth.)
In San Francisco, we have a program that tries to make this more convenient called San Francisco BottleBank ([link removed]) . You can collect your empty CRV-deposit containers into a specially-marked plastic bag, then bring it to a nearby grocery store or other drop-off point when the BottleBank crew is present to receive it. (Different drop-off locations have different hours; check the website.) They’ll associate the bag with your account and then credit it later with the total value of the containers you dropped off.
The program is getting some upgrades and migrating to a new system next month. Starting in July, crushed containers will be allowed—previously you had to leave them uncrushed, which made redemption highly inefficient. Now you can fill a bag with many more cans and bottles.
If you already use SF BottleBank, withdraw your balance now—the new system will not have your pre-July balance, so you’ll start over from $0 either way. That money is yours; get it back while you still can. The deadline is this Sunday, June 30.
New customers can sign up through the new app, which is named “BottleBank CA” and is available for iOS ([link removed]) and for Android ([link removed]) .

** Keep Calling for YES on SB 1374 and NO on AB 1814
------------------------------------------------------------
SB 1374 ([link removed]) by Senator Becker will restore net metering. Having passed the Senate by 28 votes to 7, this bill is coming before the Assembly Utilities and Energy Committee ([link removed]) next. The next hearing is Monday, July 1, so you still have a chance to call.
Call your Assemblymember ([link removed]) and tell him to support SB 1374.
Meanwhile, the sneaky surveillance bill, AB 1814 ([link removed]) , has been re-referred to the Committee on the Judiciary in the State Senate. We don’t have a State Senator on that committee, but you can keep calling State Senator Scott Wiener to urge him to vote NO.
Tell Senator Wiener: ([link removed]) Vote no on this sneaky spying bill.
