1. Responding to the Flooding in Cartagena, Colombia
Flooding struck Colombia on May 6 after a breach of the Caregato dam. Over 300,000 residents were impacted, including Zenú Indigenous communities. These communities already face high poverty levels, inadequate access to basic services and increased vulnerability to diseases. Nearly half of the residents lack access to safe drinking water.
Americares deployed a team from our Colombia office to evaluate the specific health needs of survivors in areas most affected by this catastrophe. We're also delivering hygiene kits to support the displaced population.
