John – For generations, domestic work has been overlooked, undervalued, and excluded from crucial federal labor and civil rights laws.
The result: domestic workers are paid an average of just $13.79 per hour, sexual harassment and exploitation are far too common, and millions in wages are stolen each year. But, we have a once-in-a-generation opportunity to fix this historic injustice.
A National Domestic Workers Bill of Rights would include domestic workers in common workplace protections like paid overtime for live-in workers, paid sick days, and freedom from sexual harassment. AND, it would provide stronger workplace protections and enforcement mechanisms.
A federal bill to secure these rights and protections for domestic workers was recently reintroduced in Congress by Senators Kirsten Gillibrand and Ben Ray Luján, and Representative Pramila Jayapal. Will you add your name to call on the rest of Congress to support the National Domestic Workers Bill of Rights?
In the 1930s, when most workers were given basic workplace rights by Congress, farm workers and domestic workers, the majority of whom were Black, were deliberately left out to appease southern lawmakers. It cemented the slavery-era devaluing of care work into a racist legal legacy that further oppressed black people and people of color.
This legacy *continues* to shape the lives and working conditions of domestic workers, the vast majority of whom are Black, Latinx, Asian, immigrant and Indigenous women. To this day, they continue to be denied the fair compensation, dignity, and safety in the workplace they deserve.
These incredible women are the ones leading the charge to end this injustice. They’ve pushed twelve states, the District of Columbia, and two major cities to pass domestic workers bills of rights or protections and set the stage for a *National* Domestic Workers Bill of Rights.
The reintroduction of a bill to codify these long-denied rights into law is a powerful moment to push every member of Congress to support a National Domestic Workers Bill of Rights – add your name now!
