John,

I, like many others, am still reeling recent 11th Circuit Court of Appeals decision holding that the Fearless Fund Strivers Grant Contest for Black women is discriminatory. It’s vital to understand that this decision is part of a much larger and calculated effort to block considerations of race in a country that has long made race-based decisions.These decisions have permeated every level of government—and with so many taking place at the local or state level, they don’t always make national headlines. 

At the risk of missing the bigger picture of the legal and political rollback of rights—we must remember that part of gaining and maintaining power is understanding what tools we have available as a collective of people followed by a commitment to working together. It’s not that we can’t achieve victory—but we must remain vigilant and readily do the work to immobilize the inevitable recoil that mutes our victories, and actively design and demand the future we deserve.
