John,
I wanted to share the latest update on the Kids Online Safety Act (KOSA) and ask you to take an urgent action today.
Last week, Senators Schumer and Blumenthal took to the Senate floor to talk about their commitment to moving this dangerous bill forward. There are a few Senators keeping the vote from happening right now, but we need to make sure they keep up their opposition to block the vote unless it is fully fixed to stop it from becoming a censorship bill.
On the House side, the House Energy and Commerce Committee could consider the bill as soon as this week. If it gets voted out of this committee, the next stop is a full House vote. We still have the opportunity to win significant changes to get rid of the part of KOSA that would let government officials decide what content they think is “dangerous” for young people. And if we can’t, we need to keep raising opposition to keep KOSA from passing.
If we’re going to fix or stop KOSA, your lawmakers need to hear from you right now. Whether you’ve already sent a message or this is your first time, please contact your lawmakers using our simple action page and tell them to oppose or fix KOSA!
TAKE ACTION ON KOSA
Even though the Senate is poised to pass KOSA, the clock is on our side. Because this is an election year we might be able to keep Congress from moving KOSA forward. But to do this we need to demonstrate massive opposition to this bill (lawmakers don’t want to vote on controversial legislation right before people have to vote for them).
We’ve been helping organize activists to show up at local pride events with anti-KOSA signs, working with local organizations to contact lawmakers, and are setting up meetings between individuals like you and their lawmakers (reply to this email if you want to join a meeting with your lawmakers!). All of this is helping, but elected officials are most likely to listen to their own constituents. That’s why your actions against KOSA are so critical right now.
We’re committed to stopping this bill unless it is fully fixed, to protect LGBTQ resources, reproductive healthcare, and other lifelines for marginalized communities online. Take action now to fight with us!
Together (and Happy Pride!🏳️🌈)
